Filtering & monitoring
Who is responsible for filtering and monitoring
Filtering and monitoring is one of the DfE’s core digital and technology standards, and the responsibilities are shared. Schools often ask us where the line sits, so we set it out plainly: the duty stays with the school, and we hold the technical side of it.
Your governing body or trust board
Holds overall strategic responsibility, and makes sure provision is reviewed at least once every academic year.
Your senior leadership team
Scopes what the school needs, procures the systems, documents blocking decisions and reviews how well they work.
Your designated safeguarding lead
Leads on safeguarding and online safety, checks the reports and acts on what they show.
Cnetso, as your IT support
Holds the technical responsibility: we configure and maintain the systems, produce the reports your DSL acts on, complete the follow-up actions, and support your annual review.
The four DfE filtering and monitoring standards
- Identify and assign roles and responsibilities to manage your filtering and monitoring systems
- Review your filtering and monitoring provision at least annually
- Block harmful and inappropriate content without unreasonably impacting teaching and learning
- Have effective monitoring strategies that meet the safeguarding needs of your school
